Boom. I ordered an iMac 24″ 2.8 Ghz “Extreme”

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Couldn’t resist the reality distortion field any longer. After a couple of days of going back and forth trying to decide between the 24″ iMac and a Mac Pro, I bit on the 24″ iMac. Reasons? Namely the 24″ monitor. At the end of the day a 2.8 GHz dual core chip is more than adequate to do what I need and I’d much rather have a ginormous monitor and it doesn’t hurt that with a wireless keyboard and mouse only have a power cable going into the iMac seems very appealing from a clutter standpoint. My home built AMD X2 4200 will become a file/media server and be relegated to the closet for now. Now Apple please ship the iMac pronto!iMac

So you want to use your “Time Machine” on your Airport…

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Originally Apple had included the ability for Time Machine in Leopard to backup to drives connected to Airport Extreme Base Stations, and well apparently it was dropped some way or another. Lucky someone has found a way to enable you to utilize this awesome feature that was removed. here are the directions:

  1. disconnect airport disk and plug into computer as a USB drive directly.
  2. Set up time machine to use this volume.
  3. In terminal cd to volume “cd /Volume/HDD”
  4. In terminal “touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported” this will create an invisible file.
  5. In terminal “sudo chown root:admin .com.apple.timemachine.supported”
  6. In terminal “sudo chmod 1775 .com.apple.timemachine.supported”
  7. In terminal “ls -l -a” the .com.apple.timemachine.supported file should be -rwxrwxr-t
  8. eject disk, unplug from mac, plug into Airport.
  9. mount at mac using connect to server in finder (command k) and afp://airportname.local./HDname
  10. see if time machine now sees the drive and tries to use it.

Thanks to A@ron at Macrumors for the tip!

It is good…

So Leopard is about to pounce (sorry couldn’t resist), and the reviews are in…. and they are strong. Looks like the unanimous feeling is Leopard is worth the price of admission. Looking forward to getting my hands on a copy tomorrow morning, and still wrestling with deciding whether or not to bite the bullet and order a new Mac desktop since my Vista box is having fits. Yeah I know I am stretching to justify but man o man do those Mac Pros just cook.Leopard
